Things are hardly ever what it seems. April knows that firsthand. She endured all types of abuse and witnessed things that no adult, let alone a child, should see.
Her mom ran away from home several times as a girl because she was forced to take care of the other kids in her family. At the age of 16, she is once again a child raising a child. April's father served in Vietnam for a short period of time and who knows if that is what caused him to turn into an abusive man.
This book is extremely difficult to read at times but it is an eye-opener. It made me thank God once again for the upbringing I had and it makes me crazy that people can be so horrible. I'm really glad that April took her situation and is turning it into a learning experience. The more aware we are of what happens, the easier it will be to stop the cruelty.
