The Vampire Diaries continues its sixth season with more delicious drama to sink your teeth into. In season five, after a passionate summer with Damon, Elena headed to Whitmore College with Caroline, not knowing Bonnie sacrificed her life for Jeremy’s. Meanwhile, Stefan and Caroline’s friendship deepened as they stood up to the Travelers, a nomadic witch tribe driven to strip Mystic Falls of magic and cast out its supernatural residents. In the shocking season finale, Damon, fearing he would lose his loved ones on the crumbling Other Side, made a huge sacrifice to bring them all back — with catastrophic and heartbreaking results. Season six follows the characters’ journey back to each other as they explore the duality of good versus evil inside themselves. About The Originals The Complete Second Season

As Original vampire-werewolf hybrid Klaus Mikaelson returned to the vibrant, supernaturally charged city of New Orleans in season one, he was stunned to learn — along with his siblings Elijah and Rebekah — that Hayley, a werewolf, was pregnant with his child, and his vampire protégé, Marcel, whom the Original siblings had thought long dead, was ruling the French Quarter. Soon, a bloody war escalated between vampires and witches — the stakes raised by powerful teenage witch Davina and by Klaus’s bond with Cami, a student with a painful past — and a ruthless pack of wolves seized the opportunity to stage a violent coup. Now, in season two, a new status quo must be adjusted to, as the newly empowered werewolves control the city. Klaus struggles with weaknesses as Elijah desperately tries to save Hayley — now a hybrid — from a vicious spiral of self-destruction. Meanwhile, with the re-emergence of several Mikaelsons, “family is power” takes on new meaning.

A Cult to Remember

I've always had a fascination with cults.  How one person can bend so many others to their will has always been intriguing.

The Following - I started watching The Following when it first premiered and it's an addicting show.  Joe Carroll is leading a huge following that includes police officers, FBI agents and more.  His cult basis is the work of Edgar Allen Poe.  If you haven't checked the show out yet, it's on Fox and I highly recommend it.

The Twelve by Howard & Susan Kaminsky - I read this book several years ago but it still has a special place in my brain.  It's about a group of twelve kids that were "rescued" from a cult when their home burnt down.  Everything is looking bright for these kids until five years later when they all disappear and wreak havoc on society.  I loved this book!

Review & #Giveaway - The Fades: Season One (Blu-ray)

ABOUT THE SHOW:

Seventeen-year-old geek Paul (Iain De Caestecker, Young Herriot) is haunted by apocalyptic dreams that his therapist can’t explain. Neither can best friend and fellow social outcast, Mac (Daniel Kaluuya, Johnny English Reborn, Skins), or unsympathetic and much cooler twin sister, Anna (Lily Loveless, Skins, Bedlam). But trying to fit in becomes the least of Paul and Mac’s worries, as Paul’s horrific dreams become a reality and they are embroiled in a battle between the living and the dead. Natalie Dormer (The Tudors, Captain America: The First Avenger), Johnny Harris (Snow White and the Huntsman), Joe Dempsie (Game of Thrones, Skins), and Tom Ellis (Merlin) also star in this smart new series that embraces both comedy and horror. According to Vogue, “The world of the Fades comes alive through a cast that Dickens might have dreamed up, had he ever turned his mind to zombies.”

Paul and Mac love comic books, video games, riding bicycles and talking about - but not particularly with - girls. Their stats are on par with your average social outcasts. But for a long time, Paul’s mind has been filled with dark nightmares of an abandoned world where the sky rains ash. Worse still, Paul has started to see things - horrible creatures that aren’t human. Then late one night, his dreams start to become real. As fate would have it, Paul meets Neil (Johnny Harris) and his nightmares - though still terrifying - start to make more sense. Neil explains that the things he can see are Fades. Paul is special - he’s one of a small group of people who can see them.

Fades are the ghosts or spirits of human beings. Everyone who dies becomes a Fade. They cannot be seen, heard, smelt or touched by the living, and they are completely unable to interact with our world. The Fades should ascend, but for some reason, that isn’t happening. They’re trapped in a world they can’t experience - until now. See, an embittered and vengeful Fade has found a way to break the barrier between the dead and the living. He’s telling everyone he knows. And soon the fate of humanity will rest in the hands of Paul and Mac, two best friends who already have enough trouble surviving high school, let alone saving the world.

Bonus features include:

Extra Scenes
Deleted Scenes
Behind The Scenes
Deleted Scenes and Outtakes
“Mac Explains” web videos

MY THOUGHTS:

I was psyched when I found out that I would be receiving a review copy of The Fades: Season One.  After reading what the show was about, I knew that it was right up my alley.  I devoured this entire season in a couple of days.  I've always been a fan of ghosts and I found the idea of ghosts being trapped here thrilling.  When a fade figures out a way to get through, the show becomes all consuming!  The acting is excellent and the special effects are outstanding.  If you like the supernatural genre, you should check out this amazing show.

Paul the Male Matchmaker: Part 2

I've been watching episodes of Paul the Male Matchmaker on Hulu and it's super funny.  My favorite episode is the very first one.  I love it when Paul asks Leslie to tell him about herself.  She starts explaining why she has to come to him to help her find someone special.  She tells him that she keeps attracting guys who are only interested in her looks.  Paul wrinkles up his nose and says "really, that's a problem for you".  The way he approaches his clients is unconventional and the stuff he says totally catches me off guard.  Have you seen Paul the Matchmaker yet?

Disclosure: I have been hired by Warner Bros WBWord division to raise awareness for Paul the Male Matchmaker.

MY THOUGHTS:

I watched Doctor Who: The Sensorites the other day and found it to be extremely entertaining.  I have been a fan of the science-fiction genre for as long as I can remember.  As a child, I used to love it when my dad would be home on leave from his job with the Navy.  We would have marathons and view different science-fiction movies and television shows.

Doctor Who is one of my favorite shows because you never know what will happen.  The Sensorites is an essential piece for Doctor Who fans.  The commentary offers extra information and the featurette is quite interesting.

Berry S’Mores

This take on a classic summer treat is sure to please the kids without giving them an insane sugar high! All you need are graham crackers, softened cream cheese and sliced berries (adding in chocolate is optional as these are delicious without it). Just break the graham cracker in half, spread about a table spoon of cream cheese on one side, add some berries on top, and put the other half of the graham cracker on top. Now you have an easy, delicious, healthy s’more to enjoy!

Blueberry Muffins

These delicious blueberry muffins are an easy six-ingredient fix for your berry cravings! All you need is a cup and a half of flour, 1 egg, a half cup of milk, one fourth cup of oil, a half cup of sugar, and one cup of fresh or frozen berries. First, preheat your oven to 400 degrees and grease a muffin pan. Next, beat the egg, and stir in the milk and oil, then add your dry ingredients (the batter should be lumpy). Gently stir in the blueberries and fill your muffin tins, then bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the muffins are a nice golden brown.

Strawberry Trifle

A yummy strawberry trifle is the perfect treat to eat while enjoying the new Strawberry Shortcake DVDs! To make it you need four tablespoons of sugar, two pints of fresh strawberries (chopped), four ounces of softened cream cheese, two cups of whipping cream, one pre-made pound cake, and one half cup of melted, seedless raspberry jelly. First, stir two tablespoons of sugar into the sliced strawberries. Next, beat the remaining two tablespoons of sugar into the cream cheese. Whip the cream until stiff peaks form, and then gently fold the cream into the cream cheese/sugar mixture. Then, cut the pound cake into slices that are about 1/3 inch thick. Arrange a layer of those slices at the bottom of a glass bowl (or a festive clear glass container of your choosing), then drizzle with the melted jelly. Next, add a layer of strawberries and a layer of the cream cheese mixture. Continue layering, making sure that the last layer is the cream cheese mixture. Garnish with strawberries.

Raspberry Tart

This raspberry tart is both yummy and simple to make (with a little help from mom and dad)! To start, gather a cup of flour, a stick of butter, two tablespoons of confectioner’s sugar, four cups of fresh raspberries, and eight ounces of raspberry jam. Blend together the flour, butter and sugar, and chill for one hour. Then, pat the chilled crust into a tart pan, and bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes. Cool the crust, and then arrange the raspberries on top of it. Last, microwave your raspberry jam until it begin to boil, then pour the jam over the fruit. Cover and refrigerate for an hour, then enjoy!

Review & #Giveaway - Doctor Who: The Caves of Androzani Special Edition

SYNOPSIS:

The TARDIS arrives on Androzani Minor, the source of a life-prolonging drug refined from a substance called spectrox. Production of the drug is controlled by Sharaz Jek, a facially deformed madman in self imposed exile, who blames Morgus, a powerful industrialist on Androzani Major, for all his misfortunes.

Jek is fighting government troops sent to liberate the drug. His weaponry is being supplied by gun-runners secretly employed by Morgus, who receives payment from Jek in refined spectrox. This gives Morgus a monopoly of the drug on Major.

Jek becomes infatuated with Peri, and saves her and the Doctor from being executed on Morgus's orders by government troops led by General Chellak. The two travellers escape after learning that they have contracted spectrox toxaemia, a fatal condition to which there is only one antidote - the milk from a queen bat, which the Doctor must obtain from the deep caves on Minor. Morgus, seeing his power base slipping away, travels to Minor.

In a climactic battle, Morgus, Jek and all the soldiers are killed. With moments to spare, the Doctor carries Peri back to the TARDIS, where he gives her all the milk that he has managed to collect. She recovers, but the Doctor has to regenerate to save his own life.

  • Audio commentary by Peter Davison (the Doctor), Nicola Bryant (Peri), and director Graeme Harper
  • Directing Who: Then & Now featurette with Graeme Harper
  • Chain Reaction making-of featurette

Review & #Giveaway - Doctor Who: The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe

ABOUT THE FILM:

It’s Christmas Eve, 1938, when Madge Arwell comes to the aid of an injured Spaceman Angel as she cycles home, in this year’s “Doctor Who” Christmas Special, starring Matt Smith as the Doctor.

He promises to repay her kindness – all she has to do is make a wish.

Three years later, a devastated Madge escapes war-torn London with her two children for a dilapidated house in Dorset. She is crippled with grief at the news her husband has been lost over the channel, but determined to give Lily and Cyril the best Christmas ever.

The Arwells are surprised to be greeted by a madcap caretaker whose mysterious Christmas gift leads them into a magical wintry world. Here, Madge will learn how to be braver than she ever thought possible. And that wishes can come true…

MY THOUGHTS:

I recently received a copy of Doctor Who: The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe to review.  I was really excited because I had yet to see this particular special.  Matt Smith is always brilliant when he plays the role of the Doctor and this DVD is no exception.  I was swept away by this fantastic science-fiction masterpiece.  If you haven't had a chance to see any of the episodes of Doctor Who yet, The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe is a fine place to start.

Paul the Male Matchmaker

I was watching the first season of Paul the Male Matchmaker and became really interested by the third episode.  In it, Lisa Edelstein plays Jillian, who asks for Paul's help.  She was in a four year relationship, so she's kind of out of her element when it comes to dating.  Jillian gets fixed up with a 'dummy' and it made me think about a time in my late teens when a friend decided to play matchmaker for me.

I working as a loan processor at the time and had just gotten out of a relationship.  A friend of mine kept talking about this guy she knew and how she wanted me to meet him.  At first, I didn't want to because I didn't really like the idea of being set up.  I was young and didn't really feel the need for a boyfriend, so I didn't know why people kept acting like being single was a bad thing.  Well, we met up and ended up going out for a little bit.  She thought we were perfect for each other but really it was just a waste of my time.  After that, I decided that no one would ever set me up again.

What are your thoughts on this show?

#Giveaway - Lawrence Welk Classic Episodes, Vol. 1-4

Hosted by iconic musician, accordionist and band leader Lawrence Welk – whose style came to be known as “champagne music” – The Lawrence Welk Show first aired locally in Los Angeles from 1951-55, broadcast from the Aragon Ballroom in Venice Beach. (The show debuted nationally in July 1955, taping at the Hollywood Palladium for 23 of its 27 years on air).

Much of the show’s appeal was Welk himself, endearing himself to the audience with his unusual accent (born in the German-speaking community of Strasburg, N.D., he didn’t begin learning English until he started school). Recorded as if it was a live performance, the show was at times quite free-wheeling, with Welk frequently pulling women from the audience for a turn on the dance floor!

Welk’s music highlighted popular music standards, polkas and novelty songs delivered in a smooth, good-humored, easy-listening style and family-oriented manner. The program embraced changes on the musical scene over the years, featuring fresh music alongside the classics, even music originally not intended for the big-band sound.

Featured in this four-disc, collectors set are the fifth anniversary show, the “Gypsy” show, a salute to veterans and a Mardi Gras celebration. Also joining Welk are his “Champagne Lady” of 22 years, Norma Zimmer, polka musician Walter “Li'l Wally” Jagiello and many more!

#Giveaway - That Show with Joan Rivers, Vol. 1-3

ABOUT THIS PRODUCT:

Long before The Joan Rivers Show in the early ’90s – when her daughter (and future co-star), Melissa, was barely a year old – Rivers hosted That Show – her first talk show – which aired weekdays in syndication from 1968-69 on NBC.  The hit show – which boosted the NBC time slot to its highest rating in years – is a virtual time capsule of the day.

Taped in New York City and produced by the young working mother and her husband, Edgar, each show hosted a top celebrity, as well as an “expert” tackling the day’s featured subject. In Joan’s now-beloved brash, staccato style, the guests and the subject were frequently at odds: An etiquette writer vs. boxer Rocky Graziano; a psychotherapist who had written a book on martial arts vs. James Earl Jones, star of The Great White Hope.

Celeb guests featured in this three-disc collector’s set include Johnny Carson, Joel Gray, Carol Lawrence, Jerry Lewis, Soupy Sales, Steve Lawrence, Dick Cavett, Florence Henderson, Kitty Carlisle, Nancy Walker, Shecky Green and more!
