Long before The Joan Rivers Show in the early ’90s – when her daughter (and future co-star), Melissa, was barely a year old – Rivers hosted That Show – her first talk show – which aired weekdays in syndication from 1968-69 on NBC.  The hit show – which boosted the NBC time slot to its highest rating in years – is a virtual time capsule of the day. 

Taped in New York City and produced by the young working mother and her husband, Edgar, each show hosted a top celebrity, as well as an “expert” tackling the day’s featured subject. In Joan’s now-beloved brash, staccato style, the guests and the subject were frequently at odds: An etiquette writer vs. boxer Rocky Graziano; a psychotherapist who had written a book on martial arts vs. James Earl Jones, star of The Great White Hope.
