A Blast From The Past: Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

Synopsis (taken from here):

Guy Montag was a fireman whose job it was to start fires...

The system was simple. Everyone understood it. Books were for burning...along with the houses in which they were hidden.

Guy Montag enjoyed his job. He had been a fireman for ten years, and he had never questioned the pleasure of the midnight runs nor the joy of watching pages consumed by flames...never questioned anything until he met a seventeen-year-old girl who told him of a past when people were not afraid.

Then he met a professor who told him of a future in which people could think...and Guy Montag suddenly realized what he had to do!

My Thoughts:
This is one of my favorite books of all time!

Going Out

Sometimes I'm completely happy with vegging out and watching a movie and popping my own popcorn. Every now and then, I want to get out and do something new and different. Sometimes I would like nothing better than to have a night out with some RICHARD ROGERS THEATRE TICKETS. I always had a great time when we would visit the theater when I was younger.

Purchasing AMERICAN AIRLINES CENTER TICKETS is another great way to get out for a night. This isn't a place that I get to visit very often, so it's great to have a night unlike any other.

I'm crossing my fingers in hopes of receiving Taylor Swift tickets. I love her voice and I'm sure she puts on a fantastic show. I haven't been to a concert in a while but I absolutely love the atmosphere. I get all hyped up and feel like a teen again.

Blog Tour: Dust by Susan Berliner

When did you know that you wanted to be a writer?
I've loved writing since I was a child. In elementary school, I wrote plays—at least I started to write them. (I never finished any.) As an adult, I thought I wanted to be a teacher. When that didn't work out too well (I only taught for a year), I became a newspaper reporter, and I've been working as a writer ever since.

Who has been your biggest inspiration?
I have a good friend who has a degenerative back condition and has had six major surgeries in the last few years, leaving her in a wheelchair with little mobility and an enormous amount of pain. But she's the strongest person I know, always willing herself to persevere. When I get depressed over some small, insignificant problem, I think of my friend's courage.

How do you create the characters in your books? Are they based on people you know?
Most of my characters, especially the main ones, come directly from my imagination. Some of my minor characters are combinations of friends, relatives, neighbors, or former co-workers.

What is the one book you think everyone should read?
The Bible. Aside from the religious aspect, it's full of wonderful stories. In college, I took an English course called, "The Bible as Literature," which was fascinating. The Apocrypha, sometimes omitted, is great reading too.

If you weren’t a writer, what would be your profession?
I know I wouldn't be a waitress (very tough job!) or a doctor or nurse (I might write about gore, but I hate seeing it in real life). I'd probably be in sales or customer service since I enjoy dealing with people, or maybe I'd be a realtor because I'm nosy and like seeing other people's homes.

If you could trade places with anyone in the world, past or present, real or fiction, who would it be and why?
Mary Poppins (the movie version). I love the way she's able to open her umbrella and fly to any place she wants to visit. As Julie Andrews portrayed her, I also like Mary's demeanor—very business-like, but fun loving, and clever. Also, it helps that she can sing and dance—two things I've always admired in others since I don't do either well. I wouldn't like the nanny part, but then again, she doesn't do much nannying—the kids just follow her lead.

If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have 3 things, what would they be?
First, I'd want food. Without it, I couldn't do much else. Then I'd like a large supply of legal pads and a package of pens. With paper and pens, I'd be able to write books and create puzzles and word games, which would keep me occupied until I was rescued. (Would it be cheating to ask for a fully-staffed boat to stop by the island and pick me up?)

What is your favorite movie of all time?
Gone With the Wind. I love the book too. As an American history buff, I've always been fascinated by the Civil War era and Scarlett O'Hara is one of the most interesting fictional characters of all time. I also enjoy watching how Rhett Butler, unlike Scarlett, changes. My runner-up favorite movies are Tootsie and The Sting.

What is the one thing that you want all your fans to know?
I appreciate them taking a chance on an unknown author and buying my first novel. I hope everyone who reads and enjoys DUST will contact me. I respond to all my emails from readers.

If you could invite 5 people to dinner, who would they be and why?
My five dinner guests would be Ben Franklin, Joe Namath, Stephen King, Leonardo da Vinci, and Robin Williams. Notice I didn't invite any other women so that I can be the only female at the table. Here are my reasons for inviting this eclectic group:
Ben Franklin: He's my favorite historical person, a Renaissance man who could do just about anything: He was a writer, inventor, diplomat, politician, and, from what I've read, he was also a charming conversationalist, very attentive to women. Sounds like a perfect dinner party guest!
Joe Namath: I'm a huge New York Jets fan and Joe is our hero, the quarterback who won our only Superbowl. He's also a glib speaker—someone who's not afraid to say what he thinks. He'd get the other guests involved.
Stephen King: He's an obvious choice—one of my favorite authors, a best-selling novelist who writes in my genre. I'd pick his brain and try to glean some writing tips that could help me.
Leonardo da Vinci: He's the prototype for the Renaissance man, an artist who was also a scientist, inventor, engineer, writer, and more. He would be another fascinating guest and maybe he'd tell us the story behind Mona Lisa's smile—and whether any of the theories behind "The Last Supper" are valid.
Robin Williams: He's the funniest comedian I know, someone who's a brilliant ad libber. Every dinner party needs a person who can make the guests laugh—and Robin Williams would do just that.

Review: Love In Translation by Wendy Tokuaga

This world is completely new to Celeste and she isn't sure what's real and what's not. When she starts having gushy feelings about one of her relatives, she is presented with a life changing question. This was a wonderful book! A must read for book lovers everywhere!

Blog Tour: Secret of the Sacred Scarab by Fiona Ingram

Justin and Adam are both extremely excited about their upcoming visit to Egypt. They are both gearing up for the trip of a lifetime and cannot wait for the adventure to begin. They are captivated by the story of the Scarab King and they will not be swayed into believing the king is merely a myth.

Little did they know that their fascination would lead to their kidnapping. Lucky for them, they are smart and resourceful. These two brave boys are determined to come out on top.

I've loved to read for as long as I can remember. I love a great adventure story that reminds me of the daydreams I had as a child. Leaving the world and entering a magical realm of the mind has always been my favorite way to escape. I can't get enough of this book!

Author Guest Post:

FINDING TIME TO SHARE THE JOY OF READING WITH YOUR CHILD

Reading with your child, or sharing activities that involve reading is a wonderful pastime with so many benefits. Not only does this special ‘together time’ strengthen the bond between you and your child, but it enables you to monitor your child’s progress. You’ll see the growth of your child’s vocabulary, awareness of the world, social behavior skills, listening skills, confidence, and many other developmental aspects. However, in a busy day filled with work, chores, ferrying to and from school, where does the frazzled parent find time to capture those few precious moments called ‘free time?’ Here are a few ideas on how to incorporate reading together for the family with not much time to spare.
• Reading doesn’t always have to involve books. Our world is full of text. Use it! A busy parent can create a fun game in the car where the child reads road signs, billboards, helps with a road map, or spots registration number plates and creates words with the letters.
• Shopping? The supermarket is a great place for looking for labels, reading labels, helping with the shopping list, and checking the listed ingredients on a tin or packet.
• Meals are also a fun way to incorporate reading. If you’re busy, have your child read something to you while you’re preparing dinner. This time it can be a book they are currently enjoying, something from the newspaper or their choice of magazine. Encourage your child to express an opinion about what they are reading to you. This will draw your child closer to you because your interest will cement the bond between you. Children love being the focus of their parents’ attention, and especially when they are doing something special with the parent.
• Kids love baking! Make cookies and candy even more fun by getting your child to read the recipe to you first while you collect all the ingredients required. Then they can continue reading the instructions while you perform the task. Later (while the family is eating the cookies) you can say how much help they were. Praise is vital to your child’s performance. It boosts their confidence and makes them want to do this again.
• Dining out? Your child can have fun reading the menu and deciding what they want to eat. Having friends over for dinner? Ask your child to create a beautiful illustrated menu to show your guests. Most kids love the opportunity to get out those crayons and coloring pencils.
• Audio books are a wonderful way of helping your child concentrate and develop listening skills while you’re driving. After a few minutes, stop the tape and ask your child questions about what they just heard. Make it interesting by asking what they think will happen next, or what they would do in a certain situation. This will help your child engage in the literary process in a fun way.
• Find time in tiny bites. Don’t think that reading to or with your child involves 60-minute marathons. Just before bed is a special time between parent and child. Just 10-15 minutes every evening is possible, and will reap marvellous rewards.
Whatever you do and however much time you manage to squeeze out of your day for reading with your child will all be beneficial. It’s not the daily amount of time that is so important; it’s the quality of your word time together that counts. Don’t forget to have fun!

Review: How To Be Famous by Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt

How To Be Famous teaches ordinary people how to act like a celebrity. You can learn how to show your hatred of others, become more evil, become vain and act like an idiot. If any of this sounds appealing, you should read this book.

I actually enjoyed this read because Heidi and Spencer don't sugar coat stardom. To get to the top, you have to become what the media wants and that isn't always pretty. I could never make it in show biz and this book just confirmed that.

Review: Fearless by Max Lucado

I think that everyone has questioned "why are we here?"  This question causes some of us to be afraid.  What if there is no reason?  What if I live my life and end up disappointing God and end up in hell?  I've questioned that several times and sometimes a panic sets in.  This book presents a way to look at everything differently.  What if your first reaction was reaffirmation of faith rather than fear?

Moving

Lately I've been thinking a lot about moving. I've checked out some Columbia SC Homes For Sale and I would love to move there. I went there a few years ago with a friend of mine and the people were so nice. Plus, I would be a lot closer to the ocean than I am now.

Extended - Slim Perfect Giveaway

This giveaway has been extended to Dec 15th, so if you haven't entered or if you would like to earn extra entries, visit the original blog post here.

Child Safety

Every mother that I know freaks out about baby proofing. Mothers who love their children want to do everything perfectly to keep their bundle of joy safe. Reading the KidSafe Blog might help parents make sound decisions because they are dedicated to giving responsible child safety tips.

Watching my new mother friends obsess about baby gates and child safety locks rubbed off on me. I may not be a mother, but that doesn't mean that I don't adore the children in my life. I try to do all that I can to learn about child safety so that I can use what I found out when I'm around the kiddies. KidSafe can be found on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

DVD Ranger

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of DVDRanger. All opinions are 100% mine.

Have you heard about the new dvd-ranger? This software allows you to backup your DVD's and even change the format. You can copy DVD's to BluRay, cell phone, iPod, Zune, PSP or to your PS3. Right now you can download a 3 day trial for free to find out if this is something you would like to take advantage of. Copying DVD's to BluRay sounds like a great idea, especially for action movies. You can fit up to 10 video DVD's on on BluRay disc. This software is compatible with Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows XP. You can purchase the full version of DVD-Ranger for $59.95/$29.95 and receive full updates for one whole year. I just emailed my dad about this software because I know that it's something he would enjoy using. He is a bit obsessed with technology and he's always trying to learn how to do new things. In the past, he has mentioned wanting to transfer his regular DVD's to BluRay quality. This would make a great Christmas gift! I'm excited to find out how this software will work because I'm sure between my dad and my hubby, I'm going to get to use this personally.

Collection Agencies

I've had to deal with my share of Collection Agencies. When I was 18 I went a bit wild with credit cards and landed myself in a heap of debt. I also ended up having to have surgery and there was a mishap with my insurance, so a bunch of medical bills were thrown on top of my already outrageous debt.

Saturn Systems has been in business since 1987 and they pride themselves on being one of the best Collection Agencies around. They deal with commercial, consumer, medical, government and retail accounts. Not only do they have clients in the US but they are known internationally. This Collection Agency keeps records online, so the accounts are constantly updated.

Review: Oh Nuts

Oh Nuts specializes in quality nuts, dried fruit, candy and chocolate. I received some of their Blue Diamond Hickory Smoked Almonds and they were a perfect snack. They were oh so yummy! I tend to snack a lot. I just feel like munching on something every now and then. These were the perfect snack because they are healthy and filling.

$7.99 per lb.

My favorite item is the Assorted Pastel Jordan Almonds. I don't really know how to describe this and do it justice. I guess the best thing I could say is that you can tell this candy is made from cream of the crop ingredients. The California almonds are candy coated and are wonderful for wedding and baby showers.

$5.99 per lb.

My husbands favorite was the Colorful Rock Candy Swizzle Sticks. The green ones remind me of kryptonite. These would be perfect as party favors.

Savings

I'm am addicted to saving money. I'm a dedicated coupon user, whether its physical Coupons or Coupon Codes. The word "clearance" gets me all excited. I work hard for my money and I want to get the most out of it. This holiday season I'm hoping to save money so that I can buy the hubby a really nice gift.

I'm in love with Barnes and Noble, so I'm sure I'll pick up a few gifts there. As book lovers everywhere know, you can never have enough reading material. Every year at Christmas time I end up at Best Buy. I don't know why but I always have trouble picking out gifts for the men in my life. When in doubt, I turn to electronics.

Review: Natura World

I have received so many wonderful items to review but I've got to share my absolute favorite! Natura World sent me two different pillows (this worked out so great because my hubby and I would have had to alternate if I hadn't received two.) I have arthritis in my spine and it's really hard for me to get comfortable when I'm laying down. When I first laid my head on the pillow, I swear I started singing Hallelujah and then James (my hubby) yanked it from underneath my head and laid on it himself. He was like "Oh my God! Wow!" and then he was speechless which never happens. Then we looked in the box and saw another pillow. Both of us tested it out and we were giddy like a couple of teenagers.

* Non-removable, Unbleached, 100% cotton percale cover
* Temperature-regulating Natura Wool fill
* Firmer, supportive feel
* Available in cloud or cloud plus with double the fill
* Regulates temperature next to skin for healthy, comfortable sleep
* Wicks away moisture for a fresh, clean, allergen free sleep
* Eliminates damp clammy feeling caused by excess humidity
* Promotes relaxing tension free sleep

We were surprised to find yet another pillow that would be perfect for traveling. Upon closer inspection we discovered that the pillow is also a blanket! You can unfold it and use it to keep your body warm. There's even a foot pocket that keeps your feet warm! I'm in love with this!

Features:
* Decorative pillow and cozy comforter in one
* Unbleached, 100% cotton percale cover
* 6 oz / yd2 of NaturaWool™ fill
* Comforter folds into a decorative 15"x15' pillow
* Cozy foot pocket protects feet from cold and drafts

As if that weren't enough, I also received a bottle of the Aromatherapy Spray. This is so heavenly I don't even know where to begin. I knew that Aloe had soothing properties but dang it, I never knew it could force you to sleep peacefully. Every night before we go to bed I spray a little in our bedroom. One tiny squirt is enough. Oh, how I love it!

Features:
* Purely water based
* Scented with natural aloe and green tea leaf extracts
* Use on linens, as a room or body spray
* Infuses a sense of well-being and harmony

I have so much respect for this company. When I was looking around on their website, I couldn't help but tear up - in a good way. If you don't already know, my husband was in the Army and he had to go to Afghanistan. (He's home now, thank God!) I think our soldiers are the most under appreciated people in our country. I may not always agree with the war that's going on but I'm always going to stand behind the men and women who are fighting so that I don't have to. Anyway, back to this company and one of the best programs I've seen in a while. NaturaWorld wants to make sure the soldiers of Canada receive at least a little bit of comfort with their Pillows for Troops program.

I have one thing to say. If you live in the US or Canada and you do not enter this giveaway, you are a dill hole. OK, I've said my piece:)

Review: 100 Places In Italy Every Woman Should Go by Susan Van Allen

The one place that I want to see before I die, is Italy. I've always been fascinated with the beauty of Italy. It's such a gorgeous place and I adore Italian food. I know for a fact that the first place I would visit would have to be Rome. I want to see the Pieta at Saint Peter's Basilica. Then I would move on to Florence to see the Costume Gallery. Of course I would have to visit Florence.

After reading this book, I want to go more than I ever imagined possible. The details included brought Italy to life for me. I hope I get to take a trip soon.

Tofurky & Gravy Soda

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Jones Soda. All opinions are 100% mine.

I received Tofurky and Gravy Jones Soda in the mail today. I must admit that I was a little scared to try this. It doesn't sound like something that would be mouthwatering but I thought it would be a good idea to give it a try. You never know until you give something a chance, right? I have been surprised before, so I try to make a point of trying different foods and drinks before making a decision. This drink wasn't horrible but it wasn't great either. I guess it tasted just like I expected it to. My husband tried a sip and immediately spit it in the sink and asked "why in the world would someone drink this?" So neither of us were thrilled with this drink. However, we pretty much fought over who would get to wear the turkey hat on Thanksgiving. We ended up reaching a mutual agreement and we are going to share the hat and take turns wearing it. It immediately reminded me of that episode of Friends when Joey gets the turkey stuck on his head. We're having Thanksgiving at Krista's house this year and she is a die hard Friends fan. I'm sure she'll appreciate the get up.

What To Do...

Are you interested in learning what is going on in your local community? Do you want to find out what your options are when you're ready for a night out on the town? I'm always looking for something different to do. I get bored doing the same old thing day after day. If you're visiting Miami, FL, you can find all different things to do that will keep things interesting. If you're visitingPittsburgh, PA, you could find out what events are going on so that you can make the most of your time there.

Another fun place to go and spend some time is Charlotte, NC. Every state seems to have different things to do to get out and about. Whether your interested in arts and culture or just in the mood to have some fun, finding out what a specific city offers can make your night out much more enjoyable.

Review: New Moon

Synopsis:
For Bella Swan, there is one thing more important than life itself: Edward Cullen. But being in love with a vampire is even more dangerous than Bella ever could have imagined. Edward has already rescued Bella from the clutches of one evil vampire, but now, as their daring relationship threatens all that is near and dear to them, they realize their troubles may be just beginning. . . .
Legions of readers entranced by the New York Times bestseller Twilight are hungry for the continuing story of star-crossed lovers Bella and Edward. In New Moon, Stephenie Meyer delivers another irresistible combination of romance and suspense with a supernatural spin. Passionate, riveting, and full of surprising twists and turns, this vampire love saga is well on its way to literary immortality.

I know I'm late in the game with posting my review. I saw New Moon at 12:01 last night and I loved it more than I thought possible! I know that some people are "Team Edward" and "Team Jacob", but I'm team "I'll take them all". Normally, I'm disappointed at movies that are based on books. I must say that this has not been the case with the Twilight Saga. If you haven't read the books or seen either of the movies, shame on you. LOL. This is a must see for Twilight fans everywhere.

Spa

Have you ever spent an afternoon at a spa? I have once and it was divine! I received a full body massage and felt all of my tension melt away. The facial was very relaxing too. I couldn't believe how much better I looked and felt, just from four hours of pampering. I would eventually like to try all the different spa services offered. The Colon Hydrotherapy is something that I really need to look into. I have some digestive problems and I think that this might help alleviate some of my pain. I truly believe that it is just as necessary to clean your insides as it is to clean your outer body. Massage therapy in los angeles is really popular because it helps people unwind. Your entire mind and body need to be able to release their built up tension in order to function properly. It's a lot easier to figure out when our outer body needs some love and attention because we can see the effects with our eyes. Colon Hydrotherapy Los Angeles may be what our bodies need in order to work and feel at the best. Our bodies are like machines and they require upkeep just like our homes and cars. What are you doing to keep your body running properly?
