Review: The Outside Boy by Jeanine Cummins

A poignant debut novel of an Irish gypsy boy's childhood in the 1950's by the author of the bestselling memoir A Rip in Heaven.

Ireland, 1959: Young Christy Hurley is a Pavee gypsy, traveling with his father and extended family from town to town, carrying all their worldly possessions in their wagons. Christy carries with him a burden of guilt as well, haunted by the story of his mother's death in childbirth. The peripatetic life is the only one Christy has ever known, but when his grandfather dies, everything changes. His father decides to settle down temporarily in a town where Christy and his cousin can attend mass and receive proper schooling. But they are still treated as outsiders.

As Christy's exposure to a different life causes him to question who he is and where he belongs, the answer may lie with an old newspaper photograph and a long-buried family secret that could change his life forever...

The Outside Boy is a remarkable novel that will make you laugh and cry.  Christy is easy to relate to and you can't help but connect with him on a deep, meaningful level.  Jeanine's writing ability is phenomenal.  When you are looking for something to read that has substance, The Outside Boy is your best option.  Five stars!

Review: Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock Guitar Bundle

Join with friends on an epic rock journey to save rock n’ roll. Featuring an impressive 90+ track set list, a totally redesigned rock-inspired guitar controller and a host of all-new gameplay features, living room legends and their friends can strum, drum and wail in the most immersive music videogame experience to date.

I surprised my hubby with one of the new, slim PS3's for Christmas and needless to say, he was ecstatic! When I gave him the Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock Guitar Bundle, he literally jumped for joy.  He's been a Guitar Hero fan since before we started dating and I remember standing in line one year to pick up the game at midnight.  It felt great to be able to make his day like that.  I enjoy the Guitar Hero games but not nearly as much as he does.  His favorite part of Warriors of Rock is the quest.  Watching the characters transform is amazing!  The song choices in this game are perfect.  I was really excited to play these songs:

Aerosmith - "Cryin'"
Def Leppard - "Pour Some Sugar On Me"
Drowning Pool - "Bodies"
Flyleaf - "Again"
Linkin Park - "Bleed It Out"
Muse - "Uprising"
Nickelback - "How You Remind Me"
R.E.M. - "Losing My Religion"

This is my favorite Guitar Hero game so far!  I think the hubby would agree.

  • Bundle includes both the game and the new completely redesigned rock-inspired Guitar controller
  • Includes over 90 tracks in a rock-centric set list featuring Queen, Black Sabbath, KISS and many more, the biggest on-disc selection of rock music ever in a Guitar Hero game
  • In all-new Quest Mode, embark on an epic rock journey as eight Guitar Hero characters transform into rock warriors who must join together to use their unique, game-changing powers to help the Demi-God of Rock save rock n' roll.
  • Use any two unlockable warrior powers in the new Quickplay feature to earn high scores, new unlockables and rewards in 13 totally unique gameplay challenges.
  • Play any combination of guitar, bass, drums and vocals in fan-favorite modes like jump-in/jump-out Party Play, various competitive modes and more for a complete interactive rock experience

Herbal stocking stuffers for my family

Guest post written by Abby Carlton

This year I've been trying to feed my family healthier foods and my husband and I have even lost some weight because of it! I think that my kids have more energy for school because of it too. So this year for Christmas, I've decided that to keep going with the healthier eating trend, I'm going to still put some candy in my kids' stockings but nearly not as much as I have in years past. I don't want to deprive them, but I don't want them to eat too much unhealthy candy for them either.

I went online to try and find some better ideas for stocking stuffers. When I was searching for that, I came across the website www.clear-internet.com/clear-products.html and after I looked through it some I decided to change over my internet service at home to the internet provider.

I came across some stuff about making herbal stocking stuffers and thought that would be really neat for my family. I know that my daughter will love it, now I just have to come up with something I can make for my son and husband that's herbal.

Review: SKOY Cloths

SKOY is an eco-friendly household cleaning cloth that outlasts 15 rolls of paper towels. This new approach to cleaning boasts a cloth that is 100% biodegradable, natural, and re-usable.  The SKOY cloth has an absorption factor of 15x its own weight, which makes it far superior than any other cloth on the market. SKOY is a durable cloth that is washer and dryer safe, which means it can be used over and over again.   This European-made product is non-toxic and utilizes original artwork designs to add fun as well as function to the kitchen or bathroom.

I am doing my part at being eco-friendly and SKOY cloths makes it so easy! I love that they are so durable and it's great to be able to throw them in the washer and dryer to use in the future.  My favorite way to use them is to wash the dishes.  They are great at removing food stains and work better than a dish cloth.  Plus, it's great at cleaning up stains on the carpet.  I accidentally kicked over Reese's water bowl and there was water all over the place.  I took a SKOY cloth and it soaked up the majority of the water instantly.  I'll never buy paper towels again!

Blog Tour Review: Brooklyn Story by Suzanne Corso

To me, some people lived in the real world and others lived Brooklyn. . . .

It’s the summer of 1978, and Samantha Bonti is fifteen years old, half Jewish and half Italian, and hesitantly edging toward pure Brooklyn, even if her dreams of something more are bigger than the neighborhood girls’ teased hair. She lives in Bensonhurst with her mother, Joan, a woman abandoned and scarred in a ruinous marriage, poisoned with cynicism, and shackled by addictions; and with her Grandma Ruth, Samantha’s loudest and most opinionated source of encouragement. As flawed as they are, they are family.

Samantha’s best friend is Janice Caputo, a girl who understands, as well as Samantha does, this close-knit community of ancestors and traditions that stand like roadblocks, this insular overcrowded little world of controlling mobsters who mold their women like Jell-O; and of the wannabes, the charismatic young guys who are willing to engage in anything illegal to get a shot at playing with the big boys. Yet, Samantha has something Janice doesn’t—a desire to become a writer and to escape the destiny that is assumed for all of them in the outer reaches of Bensonhurst. And it’s to be had just across the Brooklyn Bridge.

Then comes Tony Kroon.

Older than Samantha, Tony is a blonde-haired, blue-eyed, half-Sicilian, half-Dutch mobster wannabe. A Bensonhurst Adonis. Taken in by his adoring attention, and empathetic to Tony’s own struggles with identity, Samantha is falling in love, even when she’s warned never to ask imprudent questions of Tony’s life. Even when her family and friends warn her to stay away. Even when Samantha knows she’s too smart to fall this deep . . . but the last thing she wants is the first thing to happen. Unable to resist Tony’s seductive charms, Samantha soon finds herself swallowed up by dangerous circumstances that threaten to jeopardize more than her dreams. Grandma Ruth’s advice: Samantha had better write herself out this story and into a new one, fast.

Told from the adult perspective, this is a powerful, true-to-life novel of leaving the past to history and the future to fate—of restoring hope where there was none, and reaching for dreams in an inspiring promise of paradise called Manhattan.

Brilliantly written and fascinating, Brooklyn Story is unique book that worms its way into your heart.  I will never forget this heartfelt book and all of the emotions that it invokes in the reader.  Suzanne's inspirational writing is pure and a breath of fresh air.  I highly recommend this book to other readers.

Blog Tour Review: Earl of Darkness (Heirs of Kilronan) by Alix Rickloff

The magic she tries to hide . . .
Born a lady, but reduced to surviving in the slums of Dublin, Catriona O’Connell has been hired to steal a mysterious book from Aidan Douglas, Earl of Kilronan. But Cat is secretly Other, an age-old mixture of Fey and human—something Aidan recognizes immediately when he surprises the lovely young burglar in his library, about to steal a magical diary.

. . . is the magic he desperately wants.
From the moment Aidan sees her, Cat’s spirited beauty enchants him, but her uncanny abilities are what he truly needs, for Cat can understand the mystical language in the diary he inherited from his murdered father. So Aidan makes an offer: translate the book or be thrown in prison as a thief. And as Cat slowly deciphers each page, she and Aidan are drawn together by passion . . . and into the violence of the Other world that is the Kilronan legacy. Can they defeat those who seek the book, or are their lives in even greater danger than their hearts?

There is one word I can use to describe this book perfectly - delicious!  The dynamic characters and unrelenting plot make for one hell of a book!  My advice, make sure you have lots of time to read because once you start, you won't stop.  Earl of Darkness has a little bit of everything - suspense, mystery and a lot of steamy romance.  Five stars!

Blog Tour Review: The Scent of Jasmine by Jude Deveraux

Would you risk your life—on the love of a lifetime?

Charleston, 1799: A daughter of Southern gentility and a gifted painter, Catherine Edilean Harcourt has no lack of suitors at home in Virginia, waiting to fulfill her dream of marriage and family. But Cay’s adventurous spirit, fostered by growing up with her three brothers, is piqued while visiting her godfather in South Carolina. Bedridden with a broken leg, he asks Cay to fill in for him on an urgent task: on her way to a fancy dress ball, she must deliver a packed horse to an old friend’s son—who also happens to be an escaped convict charged with murdering his wife! Cay agrees to the plan, which doesn’t go at all as planned . . . whereupon she finds herself fleeing Alexander McDowell’s captors, riding blind into the night with the fugitive Scotsman. Though she should fear him, Cay finds herself overwhelmingly attracted to Alex, and drawn into his tale of misguided justice and his innocence as they seek refuge in the steamy Florida everglades. Will trusting him be the worst mistake of her life? Or will falling in love be the salvation both of them have been looking for?

I was swept away by The Scent of Jasmine.  I was sucked in within the first few pages and Jude kept me intrigued throughout the entire book.  I haven't quite decided which part of the book I liked more, the historical aspect or the steamy, sensual romance.  The characters are easy to relate to and the story flows.  I recommend this book to historical romance fans.

Favorite Animated Christmas Special

Guest post from: Bruno Smith

Every year I look forward to Christmas, as soon as one Christmas is over I almost immediately begin to look forward and plan for the next one. I love Christmas, everyone's attitude changes, people get friendlier and traditions that I remember from my childhood carry over into my current Christmas experience and that of my children. Much of the change in attitude in people around Christmas time can probably be attributed to the traditional music and Direct TV shows that return year after year and remind everyone of all the great memories they had in Christmas' past. One of my favorite Christmas traditions has always been gathering around with my family in front of the fire and searching the sattelite listings for "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas." We sit around the television over hot chocolate and blankets and watch "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" and even though we all have probably seen it hundreds of times before, it is still highly entertaining and the kids are completely enthralled. I cannot wait until we gather together as a family this year and relive all of our favorite Christmas stories together.

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE Review: Jackie Evancho: O Holy Night (DVD/CD)

O Holy Night, a special seasonal CD/DVD and first major label release from soprano prodigy Jackie Evancho, has been certified Platinum by the RIAA in recognition of sales of more than 1,000,000.

Released in the US on November 16, O Holy Night entered the Billboard 200 at #2, its chart and sales success securing Jackie’s position as 2010′s top-selling debut artist as well as the youngest female solo
artist to debut during the Soundscan era. In addition to her pop chart success, Jackie has reached #1 on the Billboard Classical Chart and #2 on the Billboard Holiday chart.

On O Holy Night, her debut recording for SYCO/Columbia, Jackie matched a couple of her favorite Christmas carols–”O Holy Night” and “Silent Night”–with “Pie Jesu” and “Panis Angelicus”–two of the arias she performed on “America’s Got Talent”–on the set’s extended play CD.

The two-disc O Holy Night includes a bonus DVD featuring Jackie’s “America’s Got Talent” performances, the audition tape that got her on the show, and an exclusive interview with Jackie filmed the week following the show’s finale.

One thing I would like to know is how such a little person can have such an enormous voice! The
Jackie Evancho: O Holy Night (DVD/CD) is absolutely beautiful.  Jackie has a gorgeous voice that sends chills down my spine every time I hear it.  She captures the true meaning of Christmas with her hit CD and angelic voice.
