I have been a fat girl ever since I was young. In high school most girls were wearing a 4, I was in a 14. At that time I felt worthless and I didn't like to look at myself in the mirror because it was depressing. There is so much more to being skinny or fat and I will never be the "right size" by the media's standards.
If you have ever felt like you weren't good enough for something as trivial as your looks, read this book. While reading this, I felt like the book was my friend. Lisa understood me in a way that I didn't think anyone else could.
I felt like this book made it's way into my soul. It touched me in ways I never knew a book could. Lisa rocks!
GIRL TALK by Lisa de Nikolits
“Oh, how I wish I looked like you,” the Pansy said to the Tulip and she sighed. “Hey, maybe if I diet hard enough I can. Maybe I can be like you, with a lovely long thin stem and my head all nice and big. Look at me, so short and round. Why is life so unfair, why can't I just look like you?”
Or, said the bulldog to the chihuahua. Or the eagle to the sparrow. And on it goes.
The philosophical question was once asked; is it better to be a human dissatisfied or a pig satisfied? In my first year of university I never considered the question in the context of eating disorders but maybe even the great philosophers thought we were better off hating what we are and deeming it preferable that we seek to sculpt ourselves into that which we are not, rather than be contented with what we are. Or so it would seem.
And, if you take this malleable human, and subject her to an endless onslaught of advertising telling her how she can achieve this impossible feat, if she is only prepared to buy into the religion of thin and fork over endless funds, starve herself, carve herself and deny, deny, deny, all so that she can emerge a cookie-cutter Barbie doll, with all uniqueness removed as though it were an aberration.
But what an aberration, the quest for sameness. What will it take for the lemmings in us to stop flinging ourselves off the plasticated Hollywood cliffside? We watch a movie like The Stepford Wives in horror, and yet we buy into it – we all want to be the identical faceless impossibly ‘perfect’ same.
Somewhere deep inside, we've been brainwashed to the extent that we do believe it, we truly trust that if we lose the pounds and get the look, that we'll magically be handed the perfect life. But, what perfect life? What we don't realise is that we have the perfect life right now, it’s here, chubby knees, swollen ankles, dimpled thighs, double chins, fleshy arms, rounded bellies and all. Take all of that away and what, we would all be Gisele Bunchens, frolicking on a beach, clones, never having to worry about a single thing again, life would be perfect.
Because, you see, acceptance of our own individual unique differences is not acceptable. Think about it. What would happen if you were to announce to the world, “Hey world, I am perfect, exactly the way I am.” Our faith in the religion of thin would be gone.
But here’s a thought. How about giving the religion of life a go? Let’s trade the religion of thin for the religion of life. Let’s tap into our pure creative energies, our passions, our love, our freedom, our power. Frightening? Sure. So babystep it. Take the Cupcake Life Challenge and take a small bite out of the pink frosted icing of life and know this, you really are perfect, exactly the way you are.
