Guest Post & Giveaway: Bitter Frost by Cailin Gow

Bitter Frost: A Study on Crafting Romantic Heroes and Heroines Who are Role Models for Teens and Young Adults

Although Bitter Frost appears as a young adult paranormal romance and urban fantasy, it is actually a book I wrote that goes beyond a typical teen fantasy romance novel. There are teen and young adult issues found and addressed in Bitter Frost that teens and young adults can relate to today. For instance, Breena, the main character, appears similar to Bella in the popular book Twilight, but she’s not. She attends high school and is just as pretty as the prettiest girl in school, but because of her individualism and willingness to stand up for her beliefs, she becomes a target for bullying by the most popular girl in school. The way Logan, her best friend, deals with it and with her is important to helping her get through bullying and keep her self-esteem intact.
Breena is no Bella from Twilight by Stephenie Meyers. As you will read in Bitter Frost, Breena first appears like a shy teen with a penchant for art and deep conversations, but when she is thrown into the most harrowing of challenges, she rise to the occasion, while keeping positive and using her head to make the best decisions.
With Breena, I wanted to create a romantic heroine whom teens and young adult girls can appreciate. Rather than become a victim of circumstances, which she can easily become, she learns that she’s the one who has to take control of her own fate.
Breena and Logan of Bitter Frost are examples of how romantic heroes and heroines can be shown to be role models for teens and young adults, even in a paranormal romance. Because of this and the handling of bullying and other young adult and teen issues, Bitter Frost can be suitable for class and group discussions.
