Giveaway: The G-Free Diet by Elizabeth Hasselbeck
For years, Elisabeth Hasselbeck couldn't figure out what was making her sick. She asked doctors and consulted nutritionists, but no one seemed to have any answers. It wasn't until spending time in the Australian Outback, living off the land on the grueling Survivor TV show, that, ironically, her symptoms vanished. Returning home, she pinpointed the food that made her sick -- gluten, the binding element in wheat. By simply eliminating it from her diet, she was able to enjoy a completely normal, healthy life. But that wasn't all. Hasselbeck discovered the myriad benefits that anyone can enjoy from a gluten-free diet: from weight loss and increased energy to even the alleviation of the conditions of autism.
In this all-inclusive book, Hasselbeck shares her hard-earned wisdom on living life without gluten and loving it. She gives you everything you need to know to start living a gluten-free life, from defining gluten - where to find it, how to read food labels - to targeting gluten-free products, creating G-Free shopping lists, sharing recipes, and managing G-Free living with family and friends.

Giveaway: The Link by Colin Tudge
Scientists announce the discovery of a 47-million-year-old primate fossil that is set to revolutionize our understanding of human evolution. THE LINK Uncovering Our Earliest Ancestor Little, Brown and Company, May 20, 2009
May 19, 2009, NEW YORK, NY—Scientists have announced today the discovery of a 47-
million-year-old human ancestor. Discovered in the Messel Pit, Germany, the fossil is twenty
times older than most fossils that explain human evolution. Known as “Ida,” the fossil is a
transitional species, showing characteristics of the very primitive nonhuman evolutionary line
(prosimians, such as lemurs), but even more closely those of the human evolutionary line
(anthropoids, such as monkeys, apes, and humans). This places Ida at the very root of anthropoid
evolution—when primates were first developing the features that would evolve into our own.
The scientists’ findings are published today by PLoS One, the open-access journal of the Public
Library of Science.
Little, Brown and Company, a division of Hachette Book Group, will publish THE LINK,
by Colin Tudge, on Wednesday, May 20, 2009. The book will reveal in full detail the entire
story of the discovery, excavation, and preservation, and the revolutionary significance of
Ida. THE LINK begins with a foreword by Norwegian fossil scientist Dr. Jørn Hurum of
the University of Oslo’s Natural History Museum, who for the past two years has led an
international team of scientists as they secretly conducted a detailed forensic analysis of the
extraordinary fossil, studying the data to decode humankind’s ancient origins. At 95
percent complete, Ida is set to revolutionize our understanding of human evolution.
Unlike Lucy and other famous primate fossils found in Africa’s Cradle of Mankind, Ida is a
European fossil, preserved in Germany’s Messel Pit, a mile-wide crater whose oil-rich shale is a
significant site for fossils of the Eocene Epoch. Fossil analysis reveals that the prehistoric
primate was a young female. Opposable big toes and nails rather than claws confirm that the
fossil is a primate, and the presence of a talus bone in the foot links Ida directly to humans.
The fossil also features the complete soft body outline as well as the gut contents. A herbivore,
Ida feasted on fruits, seeds, and leaves. X-rays reveal both baby and adult teeth, and the lack of a
“toothcomb,” which is an attribute of lemurs. The scientists estimate Ida’s age when she died to
be approximately nine months, and she measured approximately two feet in length.
An interactive, content-rich website about Ida has been launched at www.revealingthelink.com.
The full scientific findings from the study are set out in the paper “Complete primate skeleton
from the middle Eocene of Messel in Germany: morphology and paleobiology,” published by
PLoS One, the Public Library of Science’s interactive open-access journal for the
communication of peer-reviewed scientific and medical research (www.plosone.org).

Giveaway: The Night Gardener by George Pelecanos
From Publishers Weekly - taken from here.
Starred Review. Pelecanos (Drama City) delivers a dignified, character-driven epic that succeeds as both literary novel and page-turner. In 1985, the body of a 14-year-old girl turns up in a Washington, D.C., park, the latest in a series of murders by a killer the media dub "The Night Gardener." T.C. Cook, the aging detective on the case, works with a quiet, almost monomaniacal, focus. Also involved are two young uniformed cops, Gus Ramone, who's diligent, conscientious and unimpressed by heroics, and Dan "Doc" Holiday, an adrenaline junkie who's decidedly less straight.
Fast forward 20 years. Detective Ramone, now married with kids of his own, investigates the murder of one of his teenage son's friends. The homicide closely resembles the earlier unsolved Night Gardener murders. Holiday, now an alcoholic chauffeur and bodyguard, follows the case on his own and tracks down Cook, long retired but still obsessed with the original murders. While the three work together toward a suspenseful ending, Pelecanos emphasizes the fallacy of "solving" a murder and explores the ripple effects of violent crime on society.

Review: Mating Rituals of the North American WASP by Laura Lipton
I just finished reading Mating Rituals of the North American Wasp. This book reminded me of the movie "What Happens In Vegas". The main character's Peggy and Luke wake up one morning and realize that they married while drunk in Vegas. Peggy is the owner of a New York boutique and Luke is a Sedgwick, which means a huge house and land have fallen into his lap. It's not as glamorous as it sounds. The house Luke and his Great Aunt Abby inhabit is falling apart and Luke wants no part of his heritage. Abby desperately wants to see Luke married to carry on the Sedgwick legacy. After much consideration and Abby's offer to let Luke sell the house if he and Peggy stay married for one year, they decide to stay married and get an annulment when the time comes, splitting the money from the sale of the Sedgwick home. Peggy is happy about this deal because the rent on the shop that she co-owns with her best friend Bex, is doubling. Seems like a win win situation. In the midst of this situation Peggy's boyfriend of seven years, Brock, finally pops the question. Will Peggy take the road she's always seen for herself, building a life with Brock? Or will this business arrangement of a marriage prove to be true love?
I enjoyed this book even if it was predictable. What can I say? I'm a sucker for romantic comedies.

Saturday Series: Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith
I decided that I should give some information about Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith since it will now be a TV show. I haven't read these books (I know, what the hell? There's a vampire series I haven't read? There's actually a bunch. It's shocking, I know. LOL!)
You can visit the author's site here.
For some reason I kept getting this series and Vampire Academy mixed up. Wouldn't it be cool if there really was a Vampire Academy and you could go and sign up for classes and learn all about being a vampire and if you graduated they would turn you? I haven't read that series other. (Shame, shame) I know.

Reviewer X's contest
HUGE GIVEAWAY
Tree Swing Reading is giving away a million books. Not really, that's a slight exageration. Anywho, go here to check it out!
Author Wednesday: Jane Green
I decided to focus on Jane Green today. I'm a big fan of chick-lit and I enjoy Jane's writing style. I think I read Jemima J in a day. I was so enthralled. Mr. Maybe took 2 days but I went down to a friends house and we went 4-wheeling all day. Jane's books are what I like to call easy, breezy reads. They seem to flow. I hope you all will check her out because you won't be disappointed.
ABOUT JANE:
Jane Green Warburg, who writes as Jane Green, was born in London and has lived in Connecticut for seven years. One of the founding writers behind the genre known as ‘chick lit’, Green now writes novels that reflect the lives of real women today, with all the trials and tribulations that come with real life: from in-laws, motherhood, mid-life crises and loss, all of which are told with Green’s trademark warmth, wit and wisdom.
She began her writing career in entertainment journalism and P.R., the sort of glamorous-sounding but low-wage salt mines in which readers might expect to find a Bridget Jones, or, to take an example from Green’s own fiction, a Jemima Jones. She moved up to become a feature writer at The Daily Express in London, where she became known for her wry take on dating and relationships.
Then, like all good heroines, Green decided to take a chance and follow a dream. She left the Express to freelance, and started work on a novel. In August of 1996 there was a bidding war for her first novel, Straight Talking, an overnight success.
Jemima J, her second novel, was an international bestseller. It features a narrator who’s a tad overweight — okay, a lot overweight — who daydreams about how her life would change if only she could lose a hundred pounds. What happens when she does, forms the plot of this ugly duckling-turned-swan story, which Cosmopolitan called “the kind of novel you’ll gobble up in a single sitting.”
Since then, Green has continued to charm and entertain readers with novels like Mr. Maybe, Bookends and To Have and To Hold (first released in the U.K. as Spellbound). According to People magazine, “Green’s writing is deliciously witty and her heroines authentic. A charming book that demands ‘Read me in one sitting!’”.
Her sixth novel, Babyville, was something of a departure; it explores the lives of three different women who discover they’re all wrong about how having a baby will change their lives. The Daily Mail wrote, “In this, possibly the first baby bonkbuster, Green has delved amusingly into the rich comic seam of Osh Kosh-obsessed thirtysomething parenthood.” (For the edification of non-Brits, a “bonkbuster” is a popular novel with a lot of sex scenes.)
With The Other Woman, Green has continued to broaden her focus without losing her readership. The story of a married woman who finds herself battling an overbearing mother-in-law, The Other Woman went straight to number one on the London Times bestseller list.
Swapping Lives told the story of two women, one married with children, one single and yearning, who believe the grass is greener, and her latest, Second Chance, is the tale of a group of friends who haven’t seen one another since school, who reunite for a memorial service as they approach their fortieth birthdays, each of whom is dealing with a different form of a mid-life crisis. Second Chance went straight into the New York Times best-seller list.
Her new novel, The Beach House, the tale of a woman in her sixties who is at risk of losing her beloved beach house in Nantucket, is released in June 2008.
The Washington Post describes her writing as “smart and complex”, Entertainment Weekly says “unexpectedly honest”, and USA Today has said: “Happy, melancholic and beautifully written”.
The winner of a Cosmopolitan Fun Fearless Fiction Award, contributor to the most recent Chicken Soup for the Soul: Power Moms book, Jane Green Warburg lives with her husband, Ian Warburg, and their blended families of six children, in Connecticut, where her passions are food, gardening and throwing parties.
When not attempting to juggle running the lives of small people, a household and a career, she can usually be found either cooking, or covered in dirt, planting vegetable seeds.
