Guillermo del Toro presents DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK, a horror film
starring Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce and Bailee Madison, directed by Troy
Nixey. Based on the 1973 telefilm that del Toro believes is the
scariest TV production ever made, the story follows Sally (Madison), a
young girl who moves to Rhode Island to live with her father (Pearce)
and his new girlfriend (Holmes) in the 19th-century mansion they are
restoring. While exploring the house, Sally starts to hear voices
coming from creatures in the basement whose hidden agenda is to claim
her as one of their own. Akin to del Toro's PAN'S LABYRINTH, DON'T BE
AFRAID OF THE DARK focuses on a young girl's struggle against menacing
and terrifying forces. FilmDistrict will release the film on August
26th.
A New York Times columnist delivers an eye-opening big idea: Embracing mistakes can make us smarter, healthier, and happier in every facet of our lives. In this persuasive book, journalist Alina Tugend examines the delicate tension between what we're told-we must make mistakes in order to learn-and the reality-we often get punished for making mistakes, and therefore try to avoid them or cover them up. In Better by Mistake, Tugend shows that mistakes are everywhere, and suggests that when we acknowledge and identify them correctly, we can improve not only ourselves, but our families, our work, and the world around us.
Through fascinating research, Tugend reveals how trying to avoid mistakes can affect us from the earliest stages in our lives and shape us into adults who steer clear of risks and challenges. She takes us behind the scenes into cutting-edge behavioral studies; invites us into the high-stakes world of health care and aviation, where mistakes can cost lives, and delves into the art and science behind learning how to craft a sincere apology and accepting responsibility for mistakes.
Bold and dynamic, insightful and provocative, Better by Mistake turns our cultural wisdom on its head to illustrate the downside of striving for perfection, and the rewards of acknowledging mistakes and embracing the imperfection in all of us.
Making mistakes may seem like the end of the world but how would we learn anything if we didn't make them? BETTER BY MISTAKE is one of those books that allows you to learn a lot about yourself while learning about others as well. Alina's book is a must read.

The Pursuit of the World's Most Notorious Butterfly Smuggler
One of the world's most beautiful endangered species, butterflies are as lucrative as gorillas, pandas, and rhinos on the black market.
And in this cutthroat $200 million business, no one made more money than—or posed as great an ecological danger as—Yoshi Kojima, the kingpin of butterfly smugglers.
Determined to capture Kojima, rookie U.S. Fish and Wildlife Agent Ed Newcomer became close to the smuggler, posing as a young apprentice eager to learn the smuggling trade. But twice the agent's inexperience allowed this criminal, with a nearly supernatural sense of survival and an overwhelming sense of paranoia, to get away.
Just when it seemed Kojima was out of reach, Newcomer was given one last chance to reel him in. Somewhere in the hunt, Kojima had become obsessed with the agent. This obsession, along with his continued mania for butterflies, could finally spell the downfall of the untouchable smuggler.
But the story doesn't end there. Working under-cover to research this book, Jessica Speart befriended Kojima as well. Like Newcomer, she was going to betray Kojima. What she didn't know was that this cagey smuggler was planning to turn the tables and use her as a patsy for continuing his illegal butterfly trade.

Seven years earlier, Amanda Flynn returns from a rescue mission to Central America carrying a miracle, and a curse. She is the sole survivor of a terrifying outbreak of a mysterious new virus: EDH1. Most of its victims die a gruesome, agonizing death. Others are reduced to violent savages. But a precious few, like Amanda, survive. They survive…and change.
Amanda’s homecoming is to a cold, sterile hospital room, where for three months scientists become increasingly irritated with their inability to identify her unique resistance to this new virus. As their frustration grows, Amanda slowly evolves into something new. At first she believes that grief and isolation have driven her mad, but in time realizes that the voices in her mind are the thoughts, emotions and desires of those around her. After her three month quarantine is broken a new Amanda is released. Confident and convinced of her own infallibility, she succumbs to the seductive nature of unrestrained power, with murderous consequences. Confronted by her family and faced with the darkness that the change has awoken within her, Amanda isolates herself from society.
Seven years later, against a backdrop of a new flu outbreak, an epidemic of violence threatens a peaceful Colorado town. Amanda begins to fear that a mutated strain of EDH1 has arrived in America, as she senses the mind of another: Klaus Reisch, the original survivor of EDH1. A man of menace: tall, amoral, relentless, his mission is more global than his employers, who wish only to infect the United States. With all of Amanda’s abilities Reisch envisions the end of human society and the dawn of a new order of the evolved.
As Amanda’s worst fears are realized, others around her are swept into the same maelstrom. A coroner whose strict regimen barely controls his obsessive-compulsive autism, a priest whose faith is shaken by the cancer that ravaged his sister – against their will, they evolve. Suppressed desires and emotions become manifested as their minds grow stronger and their control grows weaker.
A reluctant Amanda reconnects with the society that would reject her if they knew her true nature in an effort to save it from a man who would destroy it.
What I loved most about this book is how freaky it was. I can totally see something like this happening and it scares the crap out of me. Those of you who read my blog, know that I live for books like Hybrid. It makes you really think. With engaging characters, a stellar plot and just the right amount of thrill, Hybrid is a winner!
In a forgotten region of the desert, an unspeakable evil exists. By no choice of his own, John Croix will come face-to-face with the most terrifying creatures of the dark night. Equipped with the power of the werewolf and newfound faith in himself -and all that is Holy - his mission is to save mankind from certain doom.
DEATH HUNTER: WEREWOLVES VS. VAMPIRES was directed by Dustin Rikert (Alien Invasion Arizona, and the upcoming Easy Rider: The Ride Back), and stars Sam McConkey (Offside, The Salena Incident), Paulino Hemmer (Ghost Rock, Essence of Echoes), Mike Lawler (Jolene, Maneater: Part 1), Shari Wiedmann (Easy Rider: The Ride Back), and Rich Williams.
Whenever I hear the word vampire or werewolf, I am immediately interested. I've had a fascination with both creatures for as long as I can remember. So when I find out that there is a movie that has both, I must see it. DEATH HUNTER'S storyline is well thought out and the acting is pretty good. The special effects are decent but you should know going in that they aren't perfect. It's entertaining in it's own way and certainly worth seeing at least once.
DVD features include: Closed Captioned, 16:9 widescreen format, 5.1 Dolby digital surround sound, deleted scene, trailers, and optional Spanish subtitles.

Judith Whitman always believed in the kind of love that "picks you up in Akron and sets you down in Rio." Long ago, she once experienced that love. Willy Blunt was a carpenter with a dry wit and a steadfast sense of honor. Marrying him seemed like a natural thing to promise. But Willy Blunt was not a person you could pick up in Nebraska and transport to Stanford. When Judith left home, she didn't look back.
Twenty years later, Judith's marriage is hazy with secrets. In her hand is what may be the phone number for the man who believed she meant it when she said she loved him. If she called, what would he say?
TO BE SUNG UNDERWATER is the epic love story of a woman trying to remember, and the man who could not even begin to forget.
If you watched the first season of Pretty Little Liars, then you know that there is one romance that is forbidden yet yummy all at the same time. That's right, I'm talking about the relationship between Aria and her teacher, Mr. Fitz.
Of course, when they first meet, they have no idea that one is a student and the other is a teacher. They don't find that out until the first day of school. When Mr. Fitz finds out that she is a student, he tries to break it off but like most relationships go, the more you fight it, the more you want it. They really are great together and it's exciting to watch, even if it is taboo.

Rebekkah Barrow never forgot the attention her grandmother Maylene bestowed upon the dead of Claysville, the small town where Bek spent her adolescence. There wasn't a funeral that Maylene didn't attend, and at each one Rebekkah watched as Maylene performed the same unusual ritual: She took three sips from a silver flask and spoke the words "Sleep well, and stay where I put you."
Now Maylene is dead, and Bek must go back to the place she left a decade earlier. She soon discovers that Claysville is not just the sleepy town she remembers, and that Maylene had good reason for her odd traditions. It turns out that in Claysville the worlds of the living and the dead are dangerously connected; beneath the town lies a shadowy, lawless land ruled by the enigmatic Charles, aka Mr. D. If the dead are not properly cared for, they will come back to satiate themselves with food, drink, and stories from the land of the living. Only the Graveminder, by tradition a Barrow woman, and her Undertaker—in this case Byron Montgomery, with whom Bek shares a complicated past—can set things right once the dead begin to walk.
Although she is still grieving for Maylene, Rebekkah will soon find that she has more than a funeral to attend to in Claysville, and that what awaits her may be far worse: dark secrets, a centuries-old bargain, a romance that still haunts her, and a frightening new responsibility—to stop a monster and put the dead to rest where they belong.
Graveminder is interesting, intriguing and irresistible. Rebekkah and Byron's connection is apparent from the beginning. They were made for each other... Literally. When a dead girl starts walking in the land of the living, Rebekkah is forced to take action. Going between worlds is part of her job and the description of the land of the dead is really vivid. I had a great time reading this book and recommend it to all of my book-loving friends.
Since 1967, Gerber Life Insurance Company has provided quality life insurance, especially for young families on a limited budget. Give your children the protection they deserve. The Grow-Up® Plan from Gerber Life Insurance. $5,000 to $50,000 of whole life insurance protection for low childhood premiums that never increase. Coverage automatically doubles at the age of 18 with no increase in premiums.
The Grow-Up Plan protects your child or grandchild while also starting a nest egg he or she can borrow from later on. Guaranteed future insurability. Your child or grandchild will have several opportunities to buy more coverage as an adult even if they cannot get insurance from other companies. Parents, grandparents and permanent legal guardians may apply when children are 14 days to 14 years old.
This is a really neat thing to get your children setup with because the value doubles when they turn 18 and they can withdraw all the premiums paid up to that point at any time like a savings account. I know a lot of Grand Parents who have gotten this for their Grand Children as a way to help them save up some money or have the option of keeping the insurance as they get older.

As a teenager, I was obsessed with guys who could sing and dance. Still to this day I appreciate a talented artist even if the whole obsession part has left me. I love listening to Justin Bieber sing, he has such an incredible voice. And, of course, when I see him dancing around, I can't help but smile because he's absolutely adorable. Almost every girl I know says that they are Mrs. Bieber. It is almost impossible to see their bedroom walls because they have posters everywhere, literally.
I called my sister yesterday and told her about my latest project, reviewing "Never Say Never" and making a Justin Bieber poster for our cousin. I stopped at her house and after letting the dogs out, we made our way to Walmart. I didn't end up making a list but I knew exactly what I needed to buy for this project. Every time I get ready to do something crafty, I turn to Elmer's.
Bop magazine had tons of pictures of Justin, so I decided that a copy of this was a must.
While I was at Walmart, I decided to pick a couple other items:
I forgot to check the Redbox inside Walmart for "Never Say Never", so we had to take a short detour to a Redbox on our way home. Lucky for me, I found a copy with my first try.
Almost every young girl I know is obsessed with Justin Bieber and many of them even refer to themselves as Mrs. Bieber. Their bedrooms are plastered with Justin posters and the only music they are listening to is their dream guy. When I was a teen, I was obsessed with boy bands. A group of guys that can sing and dance made my heart swoon. As an adult the obsession is gone but I still appreciate a talented singer.
When I put the movie in and hit play, I knew I was in for a treat. I got to see Justin as a baby and a young child. It seems that music has always played an important part in his life. Watching him sing and play different instruments, even as a kid, was a nice treat. It was exciting to see the YouTube video that started it all. I was really impressed when I was able to see Justin perform live. The only thing I would have changed is that I wouldn't have had so much fan footage. People watch this to see Justin, not his fans.
And now, the moment you've all been waiting for...Feast your eyes on this masterpiece that I made:
I really hope my cousin likes it! If you would like to see the making of this poster, please check out this slideshow:
Three are dead. Who is Number four? From Director D.J. Caruso (Disturbia), producer Michael Bay (Transformers) and the Emmy-winning writers of TV's Smallville, comes this gripping, action-packed thriller. John Smith (Alex Pettyfer) is an extraordinary teen masking his true identity to elude a deadly enemy sent to destroy him. Living with his guardian (Timothy Olyphant) in the small town he now calls home, John encounters unexpected life-changing events - his first love (Dianna Agron, TV's Glee), powerful new abilities and a secret connection to the others who share his incredible destiny. Complete with deleted scenes and more, I Am Number Four is an explosive suspense-filled ride that will take you to the edge of your seat and beyond.
My husband and I watched I Am Number Four last night when he got home from work. We both had been looking forward to this movie ever since we saw the preview for the first time. It lived up to our expectations and I would even say that it surpassed them. I Am Number Four is friggin' awesome! Now I have to read the book. I know, I know, I haven't read the book - what the h-e-double-hockey-stick (if you didn't know I was a nerd before, this is your clue, LOL). If you haven't seen this movie yet, I really think you should rent or buy a copy. I know I'll be buying the Blu-ray to add to my collection.

Mercenary Curtie Church (Djimon Hounsou, ''Blood Diamond'') is hired to take out a notorious Thai sex-trafficking gang by a father's whose daughter was kidnapped and murdered by the gang. With the help of a ruthless weapons dealer (Kevin Bacon, ''Mystic River''), Church finds the men he is hired to kill. But what starts as a paying job turns into an outright war between two rival gangs, and Church finds himself caught between the corrupt world that surrounds him and the truth behind the man who hired him.
I really enjoyed watching Elephant White [Blu-ray]. Djimon Hounsou plays the perfect hitman, especially when he is no longer working for a client, but working for the greater good. This is definitely a movie that you want to see on Blu-ray because of all the fight scenes and weaponry. Between the engaging plot, great acting and action, I give this movie five stars.
