My Baby

I want to tell you all about my baby. I'm sure most of you already know this story, but I thought I would write about it again for anyone who doesn't know. When my husband was home on leave in 2007, he took me to the SPCA to get a puppy. We both ended up falling in love with this little girl:

Two hours after we got her, we found out that she had Parvo.  It was one of the most horrible things I have ever had to witness.  She would squat to poop and it would be pure blood.  She couldn't even hold water down, every time she would take a drink, she would throw it up.  She had to be kept in isolation at the vet office but luckily we were able to go up and see her any time we wanted.  The virus was in an advanced stage and they said that her chances didn't look very good but they would do everything they could.  I thank God that we took her to Banfield.  She was hooked up to IV's and it was so sad.

I ended up calling the SPCA and told them what happened.  The response I received was "what do you want me to do about it?"  That pissed me off so bad.  I was like, "well, for starter's, check the animals that she was around".  Duh!  Then he said that we were welcome to bring her back and get another dog.  That made me so mad that I literally wanted to drive up there and beat the sh*t out of the guy, I'm not even kidding.  She's not a sweater.  Then, I said, well don't you guys test for this?  And he said they don't unless they see signs.  OK, fine.  You wanna know something else?  The paperwork they gave us said that she had had 2 of the Parvo vaccines (months apart) and one of them was dated for the day AFTER we got her.  So unless they have a time machine, they're idiots.    Sorry, I just can't stand stupidity, especially when it comes to my baby.  People thought we were crazy because we had known this puppy for two hours and had no trouble shelling out $1100 not even knowing if she could be saved.  My feeling is, if you get a pet, that pet is your responsibility and it doesn't matter if you've had them one minute or a hundred years, you do whatever you can to take care of them.  Anyway, I get really heated about stuff like this.  Can you tell?  Ever since we brought her home, she has lived a life of comfort.  Here she is the day we brought her home:

It's been three years and Reese is doing great.  Just look at her now:

She's my angel and I am so glad that she pulled through.  I don't know what I would have done without her.  Make sure you get you get your dogs vaccinated.  Parvo isn't something you want to witness, trust me.

Disclosure: I did not receive any form of compensation for this post.

  1. I can not believe that the SPCA handled it that way. Obviously she was sick while she in her care and they did nothing to treat her. It really makes me sick. I'm glad you found her and considered her a member of your family right away. You did a great think taking a chance on her!

  2. So sorry to hear what your baby went through, I have a dog who is my baby too and I would of done the same exact thing! The story was sad to read but I was glad to read the ending to here that Reese is doing great now! She's lucky to have a family like you who didn't give up on her :)

  3. Your baby looks so sweet. You were lucky to get her into good care so quickly. I agree that they are family members and should be treated as such.

  4. I'm glad to see Reese is doing good! Hey, they are our babies! We have to take care of them, they can't do it themselves. My littlest dog suddenly developed pancritis, he almost died. We had no trouble paying over $1000 in medical bills for him! Now he eats special (expensive) food, but is doing well. Wouldn't have changed a thing.
