Domestic Violence Awareness & The Purple Purse Challenge

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and to raise awareness, The Allstate Foundation is kicking off the Purple Purse Challenge. More than 160 nonprofit organizations across the country are participating to raise funds for domestic violence and financial empowerment services to help victims break free and stay free.

Lacking financial knowledge and resources is the number one indicator of whether a domestic violence victim will stay, leave or return to an abusive relationship. Domestic violence affects 1 in 4 women in their lifetime – and ninety eight percent of these women also suffer financial abuse. It is a tool used by an abuser to control the victim – giving limited access to money, ruining credit and jeopardizing jobs.

Your local residents are encouraged to join the Purple Purse Challenge by donating through PurplePurse.com through Oct. 27. As part of the Challenge, The Allstate Foundation is releasing engaging, friendly contests among the more than 160 nonprofit organizations. Each week, organizations will have the chance to win additional money, more than $500,000 in total prize funding will be provided by The Allstate Foundation.
