People don't really associate a soap opera titled "General Hospital" as a crime show, but that's pretty much what the show revolves around. I mean sure there's a hospital and all, but the main character is a mob boss named Sonny Corinthos and the show centers around how he's a mob boss with depth. He's also not the only leader of an organized crime syndicate in the show. There's Johnny Zacchara, who runs the Zacchara family and a new character nicknamed as "The Balkan" who apparently runs Europe or something like that. Set in the seedy underbelly of Port Charles, if you enjoy mobsters portrayed as the heroes and who get away with everything in terms of the law, but destroy everyone they love psychologically, this show does exactly that. The undercover cop who works in Sonny's organization and is shot by Sonny when his cover is blown turns out to be his son. His other son ends up murdering Sonny's ex-wife when she kidnaps his baby sister in order to escape being murdered by Sonny. And that's just in the past few months. It's just crazy like a soap should be, but features members of organized crime as heroes. Now that I think about it, even the doctors and nurses or whatnot all seem to be perfectly fine with being friends with these criminals. Bizarre. But that's exactly the reason why I would never miss this show (thanks to my DVR) on direct TV.
