Did you know that over 90 million Americans planned their vacation travel using the internet last year? Not only are travelers planning and booking their trips via the internet, they’re also staying connected while on the road more than ever—everything from checking in with friends and family at Wi-Fi cafes, posting their vacation pics to Facebook, to looking up details about their next destination on unknown websites.
There are certain precautions one must take when traveling to avoid being taken advantage of such as using traveler’s checks and keeping valuables such as purses and briefcases close by. In addition, travel in today’s wired world necessitates its own important concerns in order stay safe online while on the road. AVG Technologies would like to let your readers know how to avoid being the “naïve tourist” online when traveling.
Here are a few tips on how to safely shop for travel and surf the web on the go this summer:
Make sure Web sites have “https” in the URL. The “s” ensures security. Users will also see a locked padlock icon on the address bar or on the bottom right corner.
But be aware, while the padlock icon does indicate a level of security, it is not 100 percent. Even though it has been approved by a trusted third party it still has limitations.
A green Internet address bar means it is more difficult for phishing and online fraud to take place because it requires ‘extended validation SSL certificate.’
Use common sense and judgment. Shopping with trusted online sites or brands that have a safe reputation will likely offer more safety. Also, be sure to have good Anti-Virus software. PC owners can download AVG Free here.Mac owners can get AVG LinkScanner for Mac here.
If there’s ever a question or doubt about any site, users must not make any transactions or give away any personal information.
