NOVELS MAKE THE BEST FRIENDS

Often writers will guest post about their novels. What brilliant inspiration moved them. Or the difficulty of writing, the awful sensation every morning of staring at that blank piece of paper, praying to whoever will listen for help. Perhaps, it's that person who motivated you. Teacher, best friend, partner, sibling, someone who looked you in the eye and said, hey, dig into your heart and find a way to fulfill your dream.
At the end of the day, they don't matter if you don 't have people who care about your writing. This blog is about a friend of mine I've never met. Someone I've never even spoken to on the phone. Yet someone I have touched deeply with my writing. Who has become one of those ethereal presences in my life, because she respects and loves my writing and the other day, said how bummed she is I don't have a new novel coming out. I think, how could I disappoint Bridget Hopper with a shoddy piece of work.
Bridget fell in love with Jesse's Girl. She passed me along to other reviewers, tweeted about me, about my other two novels and keeps saying what a great movie Jesse's Girl would make. It was Bridget who hooked me up with Dorothy Thompson, who put together my first virtual book tour at Pump Up Your Book Promotion. It is Bridget who believes fiercely and completely in my writing.
Bridget, who I have20never met nor spoken to. She lives in Kentucky. She is in her 20s. I live in Brooklyn. I am in my 50s. I bet she wouldn't have any idea about some of my life experiences. Same here.
Yet the magic of writing has brought us together. And I don't say my magic, as if I'm Shakespeare reincarnated. I'm talking about a simple bond of word to reader. That is why books will never die. Someday they may not be in a printed form, but the storytelling experience is too special to ever vanish. It has an enormous po wer to move and shape and reach across state lines and generations and centuries and language. For all I know, if we spoke, Bridget might have trouble deciphering my Brooklyn accent. But she has no trouble understanding my words.
My novels are for friends like Bridget, who let perfect strangers into their lives. My deepest thanks to you all.

Read my review for JESSE'S GIRL here. This is one of my favorite books of all time! If you haven't read it, then you NEED to go pick up a copy. Now. I mean right this second. Why are you still reading? Go get it! LOL.
I am so glad that I had the chance to meet Gary (via the internet) and to read his books. I'm a huge fan of Gary's and I'm hoping that you all will check out his books and fall in love with them like I did. I must admit that I say this somewhat out of selfishness. If more people read and like his work, maybe he'll get off his duff and write some more books! LOL. Thanks so much for everything Gary! You're awesome!
