This book is on fire! I cannot believe a book can be that hot and not somehow just spontaneously catch fire. My advice, keep water handy while reading. Anyone with a wacky family, a sense of humor and a passion for romance should read this.

Q & A with Robin Kaye

When did you know that you wanted to be a writer?



This is always a difficult question to answer because I’ve always been a writer, but it never occurred to me that I could actually do it for a living. 

About seven years ago, I had just completed a Jane Austen Fan-Fiction book. One of my fellow writers who taught Jane Austen at Oxford, read it, and said I should get it published. As if it were that easy! The thought had never occurred to me. I joined RWA and began an on-line class on Point Of View (which I desperately needed since I was in everyone’s POV but the dog’s.) The first scene I wrote for that class became the first scene of Romeo, Romeo. About a month after I began writing Romeo, Romeo, I entered it in the STAR Contest because it was for the best chapter, with no synopsis required. That worked for me because I had no idea what a synopsis was. I had just finished the third chapter, sent it in and won. Along with the win, I got a request for a full manuscript from Micki Nuding, an editor at Pocket Books. Unfortunately, I only had about 150 pages written. I finished the first draft in 30 days, sent it in, and about a month later, I received my first rejection. That’s when I began to go to conferences. I learned a lot, rewrote my manuscript and entered the Golden Heart contest. I was shocked when I finaled, and even more shocked when I won. That was a banner week for me. I was offered a contract by one of the final judges and accepted it. I have to say I was amazingly lucky, which makes me one of those authors, most other authors’ hate.


Who has been your biggest inspiration?



My biggest inspiration is my husband. He’s the original Domestic God. He cooks, cleans, and does laundry. He was definitely the inspiration for my first series. He sat down with me one night after I had decided to work toward publication, and told me that I had two full-time jobs I write and take care of the kids, since he only had one, he thought he should take over the laundry. Once he picked me up from a dead faint, he got very lucky and has been doing the laundry ever since. 


How do you create the characters in your books?  Are they based on people you know?

My heroes and heroines are all their own, a few of my secondary characters are amalgams of several people I know and love. Aunt Rose, for instance is a cross between a great aunt of mine and a good friend who is psychic. As a matter of fact, my psychic friend called me last night to tell me she had just read Romeo, Romeo and recognized herself in Aunt Rose. She loved it!

What is the one book you think everyone should read?

Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. It’s the most amazing book, great characters that jump off the page, fabulous dialogue, and an awesome conflict. It’s one of my top five favorite books.

If you weren’t a writer, what would be your profession?



If I was younger and could go back to school, I would love to be a geneticist. The field fascinates me. My youngest daughter has a very rare autosomal recessive gene disorder. I began learning everything I could about genetics after she was diagnosed and I was hooked. They are learning so much so quickly now. The gene mapping is moving at light speed, and I’m hoping they find the gene that causes her condition. But to be truthful, I’d probably still be a stay-at-home mom, writing for my friends and myself.

If you could trade places with anyone in the world, past or present, real or fiction, who would it be and why?



Off the top of my head, I’d say Elizabeth Bennett. She’s my favorite character and I wouldn’t mind having Darcy all for myself.

If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have 3 things, what would they be?



A fishing pole, my husband, and a Kindle filled with books.

What is your favorite movie of all time?

Wow, that’s a hard one. I have so many. I love the movie Gallipoli, it’s fabulous but not something I want to watch often. For comfort movies, I have to say French Kiss, Dave, or Sahara.

What is the one thing that you want all your fans to know?

I love my fans and I really appreciate their support. Also, there truly are Domestic Gods out there. That’s not fiction.

If you could invite 5 people to dinner, who would they be and why?

Do they have to be alive? If not, I would say:

1. Louis Nizer. He was an incredible lawyer and one of the most talented writers I’ve read. 

2. Jane Austen- because she’s the bomb.

3. Elvis Costello just because I think he’s an amazing talent and I’d love to hang out with him.

4. J. R. Simplot – He was he original Potato Barron, the man I used as a model for my character Big Joe Walsh in Breakfast in Bed. He was on the Forbes list for years and he skied well into his 80’s with two hip replacements. He was from Boise and I was fortunate enough to meet him once. He was funny, a spectacularly successful self-made man, and an all around good guy. I wish I had gotten to know him better.

5. Mikhel Barishnikov—He’s so talented and has a really amazing butt. Also because my daughter, the ballerina, who I affectionately call Twinkle Toes, would forever be in awe of me.
